This was funny b/c I just felt like making Mexican food this week and then realized as I was making the menus the day of that it was Cinco de Mayo. My Burqueña Sense must have been tingling…. Everyone really like the way this menu came together. The puerco de verdolagas (which had dandelion greensContinue reading “ESC#18: Cinco de Mayo”

ESC#17
This one had a Silk Road theme, kinda. The standout was David Leibovitz’s Panisse recipe, but the cake from the now-defunct Local Milk blog was great, too!
ESC #15
Dessert was the star this week: this chile-lime pineapple with cardamom-lime ice cream recipe. And the sleeper favorite was the yummy chaat mixes that Nicole brought to top the impromptu chaat salad she added to the menu; I’ll add that recipe when she gives it to me. I tried to make glacéed bananas to goContinue reading “ESC #15”
ESC #12: Brunch Edition
Well, I didn’t save the menus, and I didn’t take any pictures: that shows you how hard it is to teach a Gen X blogger Gen Z tricks…. But brunch was great! It had a Southern/Caribbean vibe. The centerpiece were these Biscuits with Pancetta, Collards, Marbleized Eggs, and Espresso Aioli that sound way cheffier thanContinue reading “ESC #12: Brunch Edition”
ESC#11: Shellfish Edition
This one truly went to 11 (to quote Spinal Tap). I was in Sacramento visiting friends and having a wonderful dinner at Localis–more on that trip this weekend–and I knew this was my chance to pick up some fresh seafood I couldn’t get in my home town. So, I packed a cooler with me inContinue reading “ESC#11: Shellfish Edition”
ESC #10: Valentine’s Edition
You just can’t beat Italian for Valentine’s Day. The Sunday Gravy was phenomenal—none of us could believe that so much flavor came out of so few ingredients (basically a couple of kinds of meat, garlic, and Italian herbs added to tomato purée). The semolina gnocchi (aka Roman gnocchi) were really interesting—kind of like rustic gougères.Continue reading “ESC #10: Valentine’s Edition”
ESC #9: Burns Night
So in case you don’t happen to be Scottish (or partly so), I’ll bring you up to speed: the poet Robert Burns’s birthday is January 25th and is usually celebrated among Scots with the eating of haggis (if you don’t know what all that ent[r]ails, it’s probably best not to Google it) and the drinkingContinue reading “ESC #9: Burns Night”
Experimental Supper Club #8
The clam fritters were a disappointment, but the lamb ragu was good and everyone loved the cocktail, the carrot salad, and the rice pudding, which is a family recipe from Rene Redzepi’s partner….
Experimental Supper Club #7: Birthday Edition
I hand-wrote these menus on postcards and then immediately recycled them like a genius…so I don’t have any pictures for you. But the centerpiece was David Chang’s famous Momofuku Bo Ssam, which came out very well. Everyone went nuts for Smitten Kitchen’s Miso Black Sesame poporn, which we had as an appetizer with somewhat forgettableContinue reading “Experimental Supper Club #7: Birthday Edition”
Experimental Supper Club #6
The highlights of this one were definitely the lamb burgers and the zhug. The tart was a show-stopper but way too sweet for me: you can’t control the sugar in the white chocolate, but if I made it again, I would cut the sugar in the meringue by half.
