From the early days of the Internet, where things either didn’t move or were animated with Flash (remember Flash?):
- Homestarrunner: Everybody! This wholesome and very funny web-comic was all the rage among my students when I got my first tenure-track job back in 2003. You should read the story about how the “Brothers Chap” created it on Wikipedia: it’s heartwarming and reminds me of the promise of the early Internet as a creative space, before it just became a feeding trough for AI to make slop from.
- PhD comics: speaking of academia, Jorge Cham got me through grad school. I credit Seminar Bingo for my habit of generating ad-hoc bingo cards to get me and my friends through boring or cringey events.
- xkcd: for the word nerds
