Powder Room Remodel: Day Eight (Laying Tile)

I’m in love with this tile: it’s the perfect light-brown cement gray (Simply Modern Crème Honed, 12×27 Field Tile) with a nice grain to the glaze that doesn’t stand out too much. It’s good quality and cut and laid really well, too. Everything was really level except one tile behind the toilet that was off by 1/16” or so. I don’t know what went wrong there; the backer board went down nice and flat, and the subfloor was clean beneath. But there was no fixing it once the tile went down (believe me, I tried with extra thinset and a spacer in the back—no such luck). So, I’ll probably have to shim the toilet base 1/16” on that side when I reinstall it…. Bummer but not the end of the world, and I’m really not sure what the remedy was in that short a space (like 10 inches behind the flange). When I do the laundry room, though, there’s a bigger span to work with, and I’ll use a laser level to detect any high spots in the subfloor and address them before laying backer board; and, I’ll use leveling clips when I set the tile as well (just learned about those!). But overall it looks good and it’s in there well, and I ❤ the color and shape.
