Powder Room Remodel: Day One (Demolition)

The powder room is the only room on my main floor that is still living in the 1980s. I mean, that was a good decade, but mauve is not a color that should have ever been put on Formica (or perhaps anywhere? Not a fan). Also, pink and blue vinyl floor is not my favorite. So, it was time for a facelift: floors, countertop, walls, fixtures. I love the gray toilet and sink, so they’re staying, and I’m painting the vanity a light cement gray to go with the tile I got for $3 a sq ft. I should be able to do the whole thing for under $1K since I’m doing most of the labor (hopefully just the countertop fabrication and installation will be outsourced, but we’ll see).

Here are the before pics.

And here are the end-of-Day-1 pics. I was hoping to be ready to move on to walls tomorrow, but there’s a false subfloor that needs to be removed for leveling purposes, so that will take half of Day 2: honestly, probably won’t take any longer than scraping all the backing off the particleboard would have taken, and I’ll be happier with the result.

Did it go totally smoothly? No, it did not. But that’s remodeling for you. I set off the smoke alarms trying to cut the countertop to get it out, and they would NOT turn off, so I yanked them all and had to rewire and reset them at the end of the day. And I’m wearing 3 bandaids: the most spectacular injury was smashing my fingertip under the countertop, which actually sent blood splurting onto the vinyl floor, ha ha. But I’m typing with that finger now, so shrug emoji. Blood sacrifice for the remodeling gods.

Stay tuned for Day 2. Realistically, hoping to get the subfloor out, but a miracle day would see the wall skimmed (for accent wallpaper) and the light fixture moved as well. Just pray the smoke detectors don’t go off again: neither Tali nor I is a big fan of that. Rye, thanks to his age-related deafness, couldn’t care less.

  1. Ooohh … ouch!! Remodeling … I had no idea you were planning on doing it yourself when you told me of your plans. You’re as bad as your sister. Haven’t you any regard for younger people like your cousin Brian B, who delight in doing such things. They need to make a living too. You obviously have your father’s genes in that part of the helix.

Hoping it goes better from here on.
