As you know, I ❤ Tomoya-san. And he’s got a great post out today to Tomoya Studio walking us through the drum line on “Cry Out,” one of my favorite ONE OK ROCK songs. They didn’t play it at their San Francisco concert that I saw in May, so I was psyched to see this walkthrough drop. Love the feet-cams: haven’t seen that before on his channel. First of all, I never cease to be amazed that drummers can move all their limbs independently. But Tomoya is special in that his rhythm is metronomically perfect AND his playing has so much emotion. A lot of drummers are precise but robotic, or super-emotive but all over the place timing-wise. Tomoya is the total package. Also in this video, he goes on an adorable tangent about learning to do Taka’s scream on “Cry Out” for their live shows in Saitama and Osaka using YouTube tutorials. He’s just the best. I can’t remember if I posted on here that I saw him outside the loading docks taking a smoke break before their Toronto show last fall, and I called out to him and waved as we walked by, and he smiled and waved back. He’s a sweetheart in addition to being an amazing drummer.
