Letter of Recommendation: Korean Camping Vlogs

So, there’s this whole bizarre and strangely addictive little sub-genre of Korean lifestyle blogs where people go camping overnight. Generally, this is the script:

  1. You watch them (most frequently a pretty young woman who’s had a noticeable amount of plastic surgery) set up a tent (frequently one of these amazing inflatable multi-room tents, like a bounce house on steroids) in a car camping site (generally immaculately manicured with a gravel substrate) in the rain or snow.
  2. They put more furniture into the tent that I’ve had in some of my apartments.
  3. They play with their cute dog or take them for a hike.
  4. They hang out in the tent reading and listening to the rain or snow falling on the tent (this is called ASMR—a whole other genre of vlogs).
  5. They cook dinner for their dog first and then cook an elaborate dinner for themselves on a camp stove and eat it with gusto (this is called mukbang—another whole sub-genre of Korean vlogs)
  6. They watch TV on a big-screen projector in the tent and go to sleep.
  7. They get up and make coffee and take their cute dog for another hike and make breakfast for everyone.
  8. They pack up the tent and leave.

My favorite content creator in the genre is Ryucamp, who camps in varying weather conditions and tent set-ups with his little poodle Ryu-a. You can check out their latest vlog below and see if you find these videos as weirdly appealing as I do. If you do, just search for “Korean camping vlog” on YouTube and be shocked at the number of returns.

  1. They must be urban dwellers who like to get out into nature. I’m projecting from my experience … Sometime after I married your father, I discovered his love for camping (though you know it was simpler than described above). Having grown up on 80 acres where farm homes were typically half a mile apart or more, we had lots of fields, woodlands, little lakes to roam: I could not imagine the attraction to camping.

After living in a city for awhile, I came to understand …
