ESC #19: Dessert Bar (and suminagashi)

My friend Nicole, an art professor, came up with the idea of doing a little home suminagashi (paper marbling with Japanese ink) workshop for some friends, and I thought it sounded like a great time to clear out some desserts from my Try file in Paprika; apparently, when I save recipes, about 2 out of 5 times, they’re desserts, so making whole meals wasn’t culling their numbers rapidly enough. Everybody—especially Tobie’s daughter Polly—seemed on board with a dessert bar idea, so we went for it!

The suminagashi was really fun and produced some beautiful paper without too much effort or mess; here’s a tutorial if you’re interested. We got the best results with Japanese mulberry papers, but you can even use printer paper if you want—just try to find papers without too much sizing in them b/c it repels the ink.

As for the desserts, the gingersnaps were everyone’s favorite, but everything but the cake turned out well (it’s a brownie-type cake, so you need to pull it out of the oven while it’s still a little underset in the middle or it ends up too dry). Here are the recipes:
