On this YouTube channel by One OK Rock drummer Tomoya Kanki, he usually performs drum tracks from popular songs by the band and then breaks them down for drummers and interested fans. But even if you’re not in one of those categories, I think you’ll find something to like in his videos. He’s a wickedly gifted musician and a sweetheart to boot. And he reminds me that at least half the time the reason I like a band is the distinctive style of the drummer, even if I don’t realize it until I focus on their contribution. If you want a good entry point, try this performance of “20 Years Old” and then the commentary video: even if you don’t catch everything in the subtitles, I think you’ll pick up what Tomoya’s laying down….
