So, I’m putting together a plan to do a light remodel of my powder room: it’s the only space downstairs that remains un-updated since the house was built in 1989, and as such, it has all the mauve formica, brass lighting, and southwestern-style vinyl flooring you would expect.
I don’t want to do an invasive remodel, however, because it’s just a powder room and I won’t get anything extravagant I do back out of it if I sell the house: plus, I’m going to do most of the work myself, so that’s added motivation to keep things simple.
The white-oak-veneer vanity is in OK shape, so I’m keeping it, along with the unusual gray sink and toilet. So, I’m just going to re-do surfaces and fixtures.
I like rooms to have a little spice or quirk to them, but I’ve learned after remodeling 4 houses and hunting dozens more that quirk is very personal and should therefore be removable. So, my quirk this time around is going to be a peel-and-stick magpie mural on the long facing wall of the room. I’ll paint the other walls a calm charcoal (because I personally find a dimmer powder room relaxing). For the floor, I’ll go with a concrete tile that harmonizes with the other tile in my house; for the countertop, a light-gray marble slab to blend with the sink and toilet. Fixtures will be wood and unvarnished brass to warm up the room and give a nod to the 80s origin of the house.
I’ve been mulling this all over for a year or more, but I’m likely to change my mind about some details because I like to use reclaimed and remnant building materials whenever I can–so whatever leftover tile and marble they have at Habitat for Humanity and Granite Planet may dictate what I end up with for floor and countertop. Plus, I’ve been itching to slap hexagonal marble tile on something, so those might show up behind the mirror or on the floor–we’ll see. But we’re getting there: I’m shooting for Christmas break for the project. I’ll keep you posted!
