This is partly for Steph because I promised her the link to the couple who lives out of their microvan, but also there’s just a lot of fantastic and original content on YouTube these days from Japan, and I wanted to share some of my favorites. I’ve posted a couple of these before in other lists, but I thought it would be good to round them up here as well:
- Yep, the couple living out of their microvan. I am AMAZED at the range of things they cook using only an induction burner and a cutting board. Also, their stop at a ryokan in Yamaguchi reignited my desire to do an inn-to-inn hiking tour in the Japanese alps.
- Here’s the fisherman I posted about last time: Masaru breaks down both odd spearfishing catches and enormous fish he buys on film and then tastes them and tells you honestly whether they’re good or not. I find him ridiculously hilarious.
- I’ve posted about Choki before. She’s a great cook, and her videos are very calming. I don’t like cats, but I might like her cats.
- I’ve also posted about Kominka Solo Life. Another good cook with an admirable lifestyle mindset that balances enjoyment with conservation. His post on flyfishing in northern Japan gave me serious FOMO.
- Similarly, you’ve already met Hana and Kotaro if you follow my blog.
- Thanks to the mystery of the YouTube algorithm, I recently discovered Shinobu Hashimoto. Since I love ceramics, it’s fascinating to watch how they come together, and I really like his aesthetic. Beautifully filmed and meditative to watch.
