Living In…Spirited Away

My aesthetic has a definite bimodal distribution. On the one hand, I like really spare, open (but not necessarily minimalist) monochromatic spaces–which you can see in my Seoul Villa post. On the other hand, I’m irresistibly drawn to spaces and objects with a pronounced “more is more” aesthetic–dark, rich, ornate, with a lot of reds and blues. I call this side of me my “inner Polish grandma”: or, if you prefer, Baba Yaga Modern.

Which is exactly why I love the aesthetic of the Studio Ghibli movie Spirited Away–in particular, the style of the twin Yubaba/Zeniba characters. This is exactly how this side of me would decorate if I had a townhouse and a country house. Check out the Pinterest Board I pulled together below (FYI, if you want to try to Google this stuff for yourself, try keywords like “decadent decor” or “dark cottage core.” Not the words I would use…but then again, I don’t get to pick the Internet.)
