I can’t remember whose vlog I was watching, maybe Ashley Choi’s, but she got pizza and wine with a friend on a cold winter night, and I thought: That is a great idea. I’ve been cooking well for myself since I arrived in Berlin, but I haven’t gotten much in the way of local takeout, and so this struck me as the perfect rainy Friday night activity.
What you can’t see in this picture is the feat of engineering it took to make this happen. I had to:
- Figure out where to buy wine (fortunately, grocery stores here sell it, so I had a head jump on that one).
- Figure out where to buy pizza. This turned out to be a bit trickier, but I finally found a well-reviewed place reasonably close to me where I could do online ordering (ordering on the phone in German is still kind of anxiety-producing at this point).
- Figure out how to get said pizza home warm and dry in the rain. Here is where our family motto of “We can rig that!” comes into play.
I biked first to Denn’s Biomarkt to buy a bottle of Spätburgunder Trocken (mid-dry Rhenish red), then on to Salami Social Club to pick up a spicy salami pizza, which I wrapped in my puffy jacket and a trash bag for the mile-long jaunt home on my handlebars. Arrived nice and toasty (unlike my butt, after having biked through a puddle that exceeded the deflective capacity of my rear fender).
Prost! Here’s to the weekend.
