Friday Favorites: Feedly Clean-up

  • Here are some things I was saving about corvids that turned out to be pretty fun: Josh Klein’s crow vending machine and citizen-science Crowbox project (I really want to build one). And, The Ravenmaster, a rollicking and heartwarming memoir by the guy who’s currently in charge of the Tower of London ravens.
  • If you’re not yet familiar with Kate Wagner’s McMansion Hell, you need to be. It’s a great resource for learning the basics of residential architecture–by observing houses built by architects who did NOT know the basics of residential architecture…. And this is a great place to start: her 50 States of McMansion Hell series, Texas Edition (naturally, there had to be more than one installment for this state….)
  • I wish I could take pictures like this with my iPhone…. Mostly, I’m in it for the Miyagi Fox Village pic; that looks just like my dog, Rye!
  • I’m a total sucker for videos like this one: 50 Useful Facts about Japan. Plus, I like these kids; I’ve watched several of their other videos, like the one where they take aikido lessons for the first time….
  • Heavy Trip: I’ve seen this movie; it’s freakin’ hilarious.
  • Filing this away for when I finally get to travel to India: Essential Indian Street Food from Serious Eats.
  • I actually know several scientists who are now using this new colorscale for colorblind individuals in their graphics.
  • This is a great introduction to kung fu movies by a film curator at MoMA.
  • Sobering and really interesting: NOAA’s sea-level rise simulator. See what will happen to your favorite beaches under various climate-change scenarios (spoiler alert: they’re gone).
